THANK YOU for supporting CHAP!
CHAP has substantially expanded its HIV testing, counseling and education programs this year due to the following major gifts and donations:

1. THE VIRGINIA TEN MILER. $12,000 from the Lynchburg Road Runners in support of The Coalition for HIV Awareness and Prevention (CHAP). This significant financial contribution was made possible through the recent success of the Virginia 10 Miler, whose title sponsor is Genworth Financial. CHAP has been the main beneficiary of the Virginia 10 Miler for the past two years and will continue to be the benefiting charity in 2009. Since 2007 the race has donated more than $20,000 to CHAP. The Lynchburg Road Runners is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization dedicated to promoting the development and enjoyment of the sport of running in the Lynchburg community. This year’s race will be held on September 26th. For more information about the Virginia 10 Miler, please click on their web site link: http://www.virginiatenmiler.com
2. The Greater Lynchburg Community Trust. $7,500 to implement the Central Virginia HIV Test Project, which provides HIV testing, counseling, and education throughout Central Virginia. Please see the Trust’s web site for information about their funding projects: http://www.lynchburgtrust.org
3. The Centra Foundation. $10,000 for the Central Virginia HIV Test Project. We are very pleased that we will be able to expand our services in Central Virginia because of the Centra’s Foundation’s support. Please see the Foundation’s web site for more information about their funding projects: http://www.centrahealth.com/about/ch_foundation.aspx

Greater Than....
('>' is the symbol that means 'greater than') a movement inspired by the notion that as Black Americans we have been greater than any challenge we have ever faced. Be part of our solution and together we will be GREATER THAN AIDS….
Knowledge > Ignorance. When it comes to HIV/AIDS, what we don’t know can hurt us….AIDS is killing our people. We can do something about it. BE GREATER THAN AIDS, know the facts. Click here to go to the web site for the Greater Than movement: http://www.greaterthan.org Right here in the United States, every 9½ minutes, someone’s brother, mother, sister, father, or neighbor is infected with HIV.

According to CDC data released last year, approximately 56,000 Americans become newly infected with HIV each year — substantially more than was previously known — and more than 14,000 people with AIDS still die each year in the United States. Yet, studies show that some of the populations with the highest rates of infection either do not recognize their risk or believe that HIV is no longer a serious health threat. People who are complacent about the threat of HIV are more likely to practice risky behaviors.

Act Against AIDS is a five-year campaign designed to contribute to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) goal of reducing HIV incidence in the United States.
